A
Hip-O
press
release mentions a concert from
London's
Royalty Theatre as a future installment in
The
Costello Show series.
In contrast to Elvis' many appearances over the years at the
Royal Albert Hall,
this can immediately be narrowed down to a one-week period in November
1986 during the Costello Sings Again tour. However, there were six very
different shows at the Royalty Theatre that week.
The first show from
November 23,
with Elvis and the Attractions spotlighting
Blood & Chocolate,
is the most obvious choice for official release. It was recorded by the
BBC and broadcast nearly in its entirety: All the music was aired, but
in editing the recording into two hour-long broadcasts, the song order
was seriously jumbled, and some of the stage patter seems to have been
removed. The BBC edit appears on the bootleg CD
This Is Tomorrow.
There are also fan-made edits of the bootleg which restore the original
running order.
It is unclear whether the subsequent shows were recorded
professionally.
November 24
was a solo show with several lesser played songs, including "Forgive
Her Anything," "Put Your Big Toe In The Milk Of Human Kindness,"
"Please Stay," a solo "The People's Limousine," and covers of The
Hollies' "King Midas In Reverse" and The Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty In
Pink."
The Attractions returned
November 25
for a Spinning Songbook show, in which part of the setlist was
determined by audience members spinning a wheel of song titles. These
shows are notable for offbeat song choices (this one includes Prince's
"Pop Life"), but they are also more visually-oriented than a typical
Costello concert, and there tends to be a lot of downtime between
songs. An official release might be more suited for DVD rather than CD.
The next three shows followed the basic formula of the first three,
although there were quite a few differences in the setlists.
November 27 was another
Attractions show with an emphasis on
Blood
& Chocolate.
November 28 was a solo show
with lesser played songs including "King Of Confidence," "Having It
All," The Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl," and repeats of "Put Your
Big Toe In The Milk Of Human Kindness" and "Pretty In Pink."
November
29 brought back the
Attractions and the Spinning Songbook for Tom Petty's "American Girl,"
ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You," and another "Pop Life."
